The great legend in singing Mr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam is an Indian film playback singer. He is known for his soft and mature voice. He is called as S. P. B or Balu by his fans and well wishers. He has fascinated lot of people in and around India by his voice. He is not only a playback singer but also an actor, voice actor, music director and producer. He has sung more than 40,000 songs in various languages. He won the Best Male Playback Singer by National Film Award for six times and the Nandi Awards from the Government of Andhra Pradesh as Best playback singer for 25 times. He has won National Film Awards, Filmfare Award, Filmfare Awards South for more than four times from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. He has won national awards from the government of India such as Padmashri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2011).

Balasubrahmanyam was born on a June, 1946 in Konetammapeta Chittoor of Andhra Pradesh. His father name is S. P. Sambamurthy who was a Harikatha artist. S. P. B has two brothers and five sisters. One of his sisters is S.P. Sailaja who is also a playback singer. He has two children Pallavi and charan, who is also a playback singer. Balasubrahmanyam learned to play instruments such as the flute and harmonium while listening to his father. He wants to become an engineer but he discontinued his studies due to typhoid and he joined as an Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Chennai. Later he pursued music during his engineering. He won first prize in singing organized Telugu Cultural Organization in 1964.

S. P. B’s first audition song was Nila Nerungadhe which was made by playback singer P. B. Srinivas. He made his debut in Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna, a Telugu film in 1966. He documented his first Tamil song Eyarkai ennum illaya kanni in the film Shanthi Nilaiyam in 1969. He sang Aayiram Nilavae Vaa in the Tamil film Aadimai Penn. He made his debut in Malayalam film industry in the film Kadalppalam. Then he worked with M. S. Viswanathan in 1970s various Tamil films.
 S. P. Balasubrahmanyam worked in a Telugu film titled Shankarabharanam which is a best film. After this film, the usage of Carnatic music in Indian cinema was increased. He received his first National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1980s. In 1981, he made his debut in Hindi film in Ek Duje Ke Liye which made him to receive second National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1981. In 1989, he worked with Janaki and Illayaraaja for Tamil songs for which both Ilaiayaraaja and S.P.B won National Film Awards. The duo then won Swathi Muthyam in 1986 and Rudraveena in 1988. Then S. P. B worked for actor Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989 which is a massive hit film. He won Best Male Playback Singer for the song Dil Deewana in Maine Pyar Kiya.

 Later in 1990, he worked with music directors like Vidyasagar, S. A. Rajkumar and A. R. Rahman which resulted as a massive success. He sung more number of songs in Kannada after Premaloka for Hamsalekha. He won National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the Kannada film Ganayogi Panchakshari Gavayi in 1995. Balasubrahmanyam sung three songs for A. R. Rahman’s debut film Roja. He then worked in so many projects of A. R. Rahman and won six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer so far. He then sang many songs in Tamil films such as Naanayam, Aadukalam etc. In 2013, Balasubrahmanyam sang the title song in the film Chennai Express.

Balasubrahmanyam made his debut as a dubbing artist in Manmadha Leela for Kamal Haasan. He dubbed for various actors like Gemini Ganesan, Nagesh, Rajinikanth, Raghuvaran, Karthik, Salman Khan, K. Bhagyaraj, Mohan and Anil Kapoor in various languages. He dubbed for Kamal Hassan in Telugu Dasavathaaram to 7 characters including the female voice. He was awarded Nandi Award for Best Male Dubbing Artist for the Telugu films Sri Sai Mahima and Annamayya.

P Balasubramanyam played guest role in many Tamil films such as Manathil Uruthi Vendum, Sigaram, Thalai Vaasal, Koteswaran, Guna, Thiruda Thiruda, Kadhalan, Kadhal Desam, Minsara Kanavu, Nandini, Avvai Shanmughi, Kandaen Seethayae, Ullaasam, Ratchagan, Priyamaanavale, April Maadhathil, Naanayam and played lead role in the film Keladi Kanmani in the year 1988 alongside with Radhika.
